Teaching At some universities, graduates students are expected to teach courses or tutorials as part of their degree requirement.

Make the head of your department aware of your desire to teach. Submit your CV to him or her and indicate what courses you would 1 be willing to teach and 2 be willing to develop. Some department heads like to know who is available to fill in for a course in the event of illness or an increased demand for a particular course. The CUT program will help you to: Some department heads are nervous about considering graduate students for teaching positions because graduate students are viewed as inexperienced. However, showing that you have completed the CUT program demonstrates that you have teaching experience and have reflected upon your teaching.

When approaching him or her, be specific. Look at the course outline and identify one or two lectures on materials that you feel comfortable teaching. Be creative in your tutorials. Tutorials can be wonderful opportunities to improve your teaching and to try new teaching techniques.

For example, you may wish to be a facilitator and have students be responsible for the discussion content, or decide to use a more formal lecture format. Gaining experience practicing in front of a group of people can help you overcome any nervousness you may have speaking in group settings as well as give you teaching experience in general. You can also ask the course professor to have the students evaluate your performance, resulting in data which you can use in your teaching dossier if appropriate. Get involved with your department or faculty TA orientation sessions.

Volunteer to organize the TA orientation session, contact guest speakers, or facilitate the actual session. Helping to train your peers as teachers indicates that you are recognized as a model by your department or faculty. Publications Many departments are interested in hiring individuals who combine a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching with the potential for independent research and scholarship in an area that complements existing departmental research strengths.

Talk to your supervisor. He or she should know about the process of publishing and the appropriate publishing outlets for your work. Your supervisor can give you advice on your research and the best format for publishing it e. It may be appropriate to ask your supervisor to co-author your first publication so that he or she can mentor you through the process. Find out what the journals are in your field. Also talk to your supervisor or a librarian to see what journals are available. As well, find out more about the journals from which you collect articles.

Improving your curriculum vitae at Waterloo

Fast delivery at a great price. I haven't finished going through the entire book, but it has been helpful in getting me to think creatively about my past experiences and how to best present them in my job search. The authors seem clueless about the topic of the book. They don't have career counseling degrees nor are they academics, and it shows. They don't know what content is important for a cv, or how to format one. Some cv examples listed cum laude after the PhD!!! This is an honor for undergraduate degrees!! This is just one example of the authors' ignorance about the subject.

Not only do the samples lack substance, they are poorly organized. The samples do not contain the information that should be in an academic resume. As other reviewers have said, don't waste your money.

Follow a layout of education and professional qualifications, clinical experience, non-clinical skills, extracurricular activities, and finally referees. Personal details —Include your full name and abbreviated qualifications, correspondence address, contact telephone numbers, professional email address, date of birth, nationality, and General Medical Council registration number. Career statement —A clever way to help your CV stand out immediately is to include a personal profile paragraph on the first page that outlines your experience and skills to date and how they make you suitable for the position in question, along with your short and long term goals.

Education and qualifications —List first qualifications obtained from an educational institution—for example, postgraduate qualifications, medical degrees, and previous degrees.

Also include here other postgraduate qualifications such as your membership exams, the Professional Linguistic Assessment Board test, or an advanced life support qualification. Career history —Give your current position first and then list your previous posts. For each post include the full name of the institution, the dates that you worked, the grade and specialty, and the name of your supervisor. Clinical skills and experience —There are two differing opinions on how best to present clinical experience.

You can either group clinical experience together in a separate section or give your clinical experience after each post listed in your career history section. I think it is more concise and less repetitive if you present your clinical skills and experience in a standalone section. Remember to address any particular person specification requirements in this section. Management and leadership experience —No matter what level you are at, doctors must show management experience, especially in the light of the Medical Leadership Competency Framework.

Experience could include committee responsibilities, organising events, rota management, and supervision of juniors. Development courses and conferences attended —It is important to show your commitment to personal development. List the courses and conferences you have attended, including the title of the course, the course provider and location, the date attended, and the duration.

Research experience —The importance you place on this relating to your career progression will depend on your chosen specialty. Present your experience as the topic of research, time spent, location, supervisor and source of funding, aims and your role, and final outcome. Clinical audit —It is important to show your participation in clinical audit. Present your experience as month or year completed, the topic of audit, location or institution, your role, and the guidelines audited against. Presentations and publications —These may arise from research, clinical audit, and teaching experience.

List the date presented or published, title or topic, date, and location or journal.
