Judging by the GR reviews, some readers struggle with the complexities of desire depicted by MJP - and if you are looking for a straightforward historical romance, this may not be the book for you. Likewise, this will not appeal to readers looking for another 50 Shades. But I admired this book and I wish I were still in a position of writing academic essays on literature as this one has a lot of things going on under the surface.
By turns glamorous and subdued, reckless yet vulnerable, she baffles his mind even as she captures his heart. Lucian; one of the twins. A good, enjoyable read. It started off as a love story with a mystery component but turned into a mystery with paranormal and love story components. I hate stories with supernatural elements though, so if you like historical mysteries and ESP, this might be a book you'd like. As always, Putney writes like nobody's business. Damn, but I'm disappointed by Luce's story. I was really looking forward to reading about his HEA.
Jul 07, Hazel rated it did not like it Shelves: After the funerals he was sent back to school. Unfortunately it was downhill from there. Mar 23, Megzy rated it liked it. The book started on a high note but lost it's edge quickly and only picked up again toward the very end. The twin connections were a bit overdone. Sep 27, Jackie rated it liked it. But the psychic stuff felt rather contrived, and I could really do without the sadomasocistic subplot -- yuck!
May 30, Jack Vasen rated it liked it Shelves: This book has an excellent story that is entertaining throughout. It contains mystery, although I don't think the identity of the real villain is much of a surprise. It blends the hunt for the spy with Kit's hunt, which in the early part of the book is another mystery. The premise of Lucien and Kit both investigating the Hellions and apparently in competition, even possibly at odds, adds spice to the early part of the story. It is one of MJP's older books, and for me has some rough edges, but it This book has an excellent story that is entertaining throughout.
It is one of MJP's older books, and for me has some rough edges, but it shows improvement from her earliest books. The management of POV is not quite confusing, but still not neatly separated. A major part of the plot having to do with Lucien's quest seems to disappear towards the end before it magically revives once it's resolved. If it is true that he seems to forget it, then he is not as professional as the character is supposed to be.
I tire of the constant self-doubt of characters in this genre. I think it was handled OK through most of the book, but it just kept going and going. It is an excess.
The climax was well done in terms of drama, but I thought the ending that followed was clumsy. Again, in part, this was due to overemphasis, but also at least one of the characters in the midst of one controlling emotion suddenly changes to almost the opposite with little to explain it. For me this dropped my rating by a full star.
For me there is too much mysticism especially regarding emotional bonds including the one regarding twins. I know that the twin bond has been documented, but the way it unfolds in this story is too much in the realm of magic. Again, this might be a matter of excess on the part of the author. I have no problem with magic when it is in the Fantasy genre, but I don't think it belongs in a book like this.
Another excess which I don't care for in the Regency genre is the deviant sexual situations view spoiler [ including, but not solely confined to the threat of ritual sacrifice.
There is considerable description of sado-masicism. One of the heroines, Kira, is abducted and forced as a sexual slave to act out these roles. It almost appears that this is supposed to be less horrible than being physically raped, even though she is threatened with eventual gang rape and murder. She is told that other women preceded her in the abuse and eventual ritual murder.
In the first half or so of the book, Lucien is at times coercive and almost forces himself on Kit, although he stops just short of carrying it too far. And of course there are several sex scenes which are slightly more than mildly explicit. To sum it up, I had high hopes through most of the book. I thought this had potential to be 5 stars.
However the excesses and clumsiness in the last quarter or so left me conflicted about the overall results. Jun 06, Jan rated it liked it. Mysterious circumstances surround this romance. The only thing that saved him from despair was friendships from school. Losing his family has made him averse to the potential pain of intimate relationships. He undertakes risky investigations to help keep England safe.

Yet another time, he meets a young lady at a ball She is beyond mysterious and unforgettable. Eventually he corners Miss Katherine Travers, and she confesses the reason behind her multiple disguises and what she is trying to discover.
There is danger and drama and at last HEA, but not before many twists and turns and red herrings leading to true peril. Recommended for readers who enjoy complex characters, intriguing plots, and a strong romance. Feb 04, Wordsworth rated it liked it. An engaging plot and interesting protagonists, but I had some issues with it.
First-- I will avoid spoilers by being vague-- the antagonistic forces were poorly explored, shallowly illustrated as part of a dissipated bunch of useless aristocrats with darker undercurrents. But the end was a long time coming and then wrapped up so quickly there was not a satisfactory explanation for the motives or even a total cataloguing of misdeeds to resolve the two quests that got both Kit and Lucien entangled An engaging plot and interesting protagonists, but I had some issues with it.
But the end was a long time coming and then wrapped up so quickly there was not a satisfactory explanation for the motives or even a total cataloguing of misdeeds to resolve the two quests that got both Kit and Lucien entangled with the Hellions. Even the aftermath was dealt with so expeditiously-- a few sentences establishing the guilty party and a general idea of the evil deeds-- that they overlook any guilt by association, complicity, or inherently wicked and criminal behavior undertaken by those not involved in the worst of it.
What about the previous victims not actually mentioned at the end? Anyone going to find out exactly what happened to them and tell their families? Here they were pervasive themes that I could not accept, so I felt that the story, which depends heavily on these, didn't support itself. When I start a series, I get hooked. I always want to know how the characters fare as time passes. There is ample opportunity to skip through a lot of page filler. The rouse drags on way too many times; as does they declaration of marriage from Lucien to Kit. Of course, there are a lot of surprises that make the story more interesting.
Hang in there; it is worth the ending. If you have all of the book, you can When I start a series, I get hooked. If you have all of the book, you can read them as a saga. May 29, Diane Matlick rated it it was amazing Shelves: Huge love for this book, so much emotion and angst. This book was far from perfect but it still gets an easy 5 stars from me. Twins This story delves into the unique ability twins have to communicate.
The hero of the story has spent 20 years searching for that elusive connection, after his twin died. It will take outside help, just about a lot of luck, and allowing one's self to be vulnerable in order to pull it off. I have been on a fallen angel binge for two days.
These books are great. Aug 08, Virginia Tican rated it really liked it. Though Lucien is a spy master in search of a spy or spies within Whitehall's hallowed halls, this is not so much about espionage as it is about various sexual perversions perpetrated by Lord Mace's revived and revised version of The Hellfire Club. This also deals with the phenomenal deep psychic bond between twins. It took me quite awhile to finish this because I do not particularly like the perversions portrayed in here I actually skipped Kira's bondage and the acts she was forced to perform while in captivity. I was disgusted but I have to admit that these things exist and it would not do for any of us to be so tragically unaware not now, with the advent of the Net and Goggle added to the existing plethora of media as sources of information.
Not a fun read as I am steal feeling the negative effects after reading. Really liked the story - loved the N2O That was written into the story since I monitor it with patients really drew me in. Mechanically complex as the reader will discover in the denouement, supported by historical, psychological and medical research as well as explicit sex.
May 28, Michelle Werner rated it it was amazing. Loved it, great characters, intriguing storyline, kept me reading and wondering to the very end. Aug 10, Mom2boyz rated it liked it. I really, really liked the story, however the addition of psychic powers really ruined the mystery and most of the excitement of the book for me. Jul 12, Cynthia Pratt rated it it was amazing. While becoming a novelist was her ultimate fantasy, it never occurred to her that writing was an achievable goal until she acquired a computer for other purposes. When the realization hit that a computer was the ultimate writing tool, she charged merrily into her first book with an ignorance that illustrates the adage that fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
Fortune sometimes favors the foolish and her first book sold quickly, thereby changing her life forever, in most ways for the better. Putney has published twenty-nine books and counting. Her stories are noted for psychological depth and unusual subject matter such as alcoholism, death and dying, and domestic abuse. I thought about it everyday. But I only allowed it for just a short second or minute. And then I would stop myself before it consumed me. After many weeks of living life to its fullest, my three month appointment check-up seemed to be here in the blink of an eye.
And back with a vengeance. I will be starting a clinical trial that will hopefully include the miracle cocktail that stabilizes, shrinks, or kills this cancer. So today I rejoin my battle against sarcoma cancer. But let me be clear. Cancer does not define me. These are the roles that most importantly define me. But if I am going to be honest with both myself and with all of you, I must include another role in my life…cancer survivor.
This audiobook has the unlikely distinction of being one of the worst narrations I've ever listened to. This is the story of a warrior and his sexy librarian. She's not had any lover or partner because of her insecurity about her wing.. Want to Read saving…. Butler calls Pamela Pamela Morrison, even though they were never legally married. Yes I am a cancer fighter, but I am also a cancer survivor. I remember when I was first diagnosed with cancer I met a fellow cancer survivor and she told me that you are a considered a cancer survivor on the day that you are diagnosed. So today I will fight, but I will also survive! Kylee Webster was born on May 15, Kylee was diagnosed with sarcoma in September She underwent more than 15 rounds of chemotherapy, more than 30 rounds of radiation and several major surgeries.
She kept a smile on her face and never let her fighting spirit and attitude waver. After battling her disease for over two years, Kylee earned her angel wings in October My sister Kylee passed away on October 11, , after a two year battle with a rare form of cancer called Sarcoma. I am reminded of my loss every day through simple things such as a photo or going to a place Kylee liked or when my son, Aiden, randomly asks about her, which he often does. It came out of nowhere. He passed just prior to my sister Kylee being diagnosed. I think this is the tough part for people when they talk to someone who has gone through a loss.
You can be there for the person but the reality is that you almost become a member of a special club. Nothing makes you feel better as much as talking to someone who has also gone through it.
You have this automatic bond that just feels right. They understand you and you understand them. What has become so important to me in grieving is that I try to help people understand that nothing truly matters except your health and your day to day happiness. Losing my sister has taught me that. Kylee, through her passing, has taught me this. Losing your only sibling at such a young, vibrant age was and is a tragedy.
So simple but it all helps so much. Me personally, I like to talk about Kylee. It helps me when friends want to talk about Kylee and share funny stories because that helps her live on through me. A good belly laugh really is the best medicine. An example of happiness and strength. Everyone knows that holidays and birthdays are tough, but sometimes just the random day is hardest.
Those are the days that I love when I get a call just to chat about whatever and know that people are thinking about me and Kylee.
