The Rose in the Wheel was an absorbing whodunit reminiscent of Victoria Thompson's earlier stories in the Gaslight series. It also had an essence of Kate Ross's Julian Kestral's mystery series except it took place much earlier in the nineteenth century. I liked the story while I was moving through it, it was decent and well written. But then I came to the end; the author did a wonderful job with the ending especially the revelation of the guilty party, that scene was very exciting, very well done. I also enjoyed the tenderness with which she wrapped up the story, it's not at all neat and tidy but it's nice and I liked it. There are a lot of characters moving through this story and while I thought the mystery was well done, well connected and revealed to the reader there were times when I was glad I'd jotted down the names of the characters as they were introduced.
I was convinced I'd figured out who the murderer was and the motive, but I was wrong, the author had a much better killer and motive in mind. I liked Bow Street Runner, John Chase and barrister Edward Buckler who, with the help of Penelope Wolf, gather the information that uncovers the identity of the killer. I'm looking forward to reading more about them in the next book in the series.

If you like historical mysteries and you don't mind slow and steady pacing you might like this. I've been looking for a new series and while this is only a trilogy I'm going to read at least the next one by this author. Aug 22, Abigail Bok rated it it was amazing. The characters in the story are also sharply drawn and feel like real people, not types. There are hints that it could be a series--possibilities for future relationships that are touched on lightly--so I can hope for more!
The plot is absorbing, the red herrings deceptive. I was really carried away into a different world that held my interest throughout. This development seemed perfectly natural to me: His subconscious was ready, but his conscious mind too distracted and overwhelmed to do it. Perfectly appropriate from my perspective!

I very much enjoy books set in this period and about the early Bow Street Runners. While this book conveys the period very well, I personally found it very slow moving and rather plodding. An unlikely team of investigators comprised of folks from many strata of life slowly unearths pivotal information…but will it be in time to bring the perpetrator to justice, or will even more victims succumb first? This slowly building mystery maintains the decorum and tendency of the society of this period while detailing the challenges and advances taking place at this time. Those who are disturbed by shifting points of view are advised that the action does switch between several characters and there are multiple folks who appear as the story progresses, so one might want to take notes since it gets a little confusing at times.
I enjoyed the atmosphere that is richly established as well as the intriguing twists and turns that trail red herrings or provide a different perspective about some of the details that are received. I love mysteries that gradually unfold, and I think the author did a great job of creating a layered story that will appeal to those who love historical tales that bring to life the culture and mores of a particular era.
Both the main characters and many of the secondary characters are intriguing and I suspect several may well-deservedly figure in subsequent stories. A copy of this title was provided to me for review Aug 14, Laura Reading rated it really liked it. I quite enjoyed this well written historical mystery. With elements of religion, medicine, social change and a detailed portrait of the times, specifically in London's rougher neighborhoods, this mystery will keep you thinking you know who murdered the philanthropical Ms. Tyrone, then changing your mind. The vocabulary is exemplary, attention to detail, first rate.

Secondary characters are developed well enough to play firm roles and make us want to know more about them. The pacing is steady, allowing the reader to feel dark and fogged in, as bleak as the London weather. The exciting, danger final scenes will have you on the edge of your seat. May 10, Kathleen Schilling rated it liked it. I wanted to like this book, but I have to admit it was really hard to get into.
None of the main characters clicked with me. I think Penelope might be the issue. I just didn't connect with her.
The mystery was really good and there were enough red herrings to keep you on your toes. I may give this author one more time, but I think I will give myself some other books first. Found a new smart mystery series to read. Try it, I believe you'll be glad you did!
