Next Move, You’re Dead – The Trilogy

I am glad that she is making this a trilogy. Apr 01, Kim Wistfulskimmies Book Reviews rated it it was amazing. Very good for a debut novel. Cant wait for more! Mar 21, Barbara VanderWel rated it it was amazing.

I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars. Sep 06, Jamie Hutchison rated it did not like it. Unfortunately It did not do a lot for me, found it hard to get in to and did not finish. Oct 22, Kathryn Svendsen rated it really liked it Shelves: This was an intense, gripping novel from the get-go. He has been chosen by Erebus, a very sick and twisted villain to be the Tracker This was an intense, gripping novel from the get-go.

He has been chosen by Erebus, a very sick and twisted villain to be the Tracker in The Game he plays. As John tries to solve the mystery of who Erebus is, a number of murders and suicides occur in the city that are easily solved — too easily, too cut and dried. John begins to think that there is more going on than can be seen. And he has been getting these phone calls…. From someone who knows exactly what he is doing, almost before he does, everywhere he goes, and there is no record of the phone calls on his cell phone.

Everyone believes John has lost contact with reality and John starts to doubt himself, and then things really get bad. After destroying John Cooper, Erebus has now moved on and has focused attention on Lucinda, making her the Tracker in his next Game. As she searches for a kidnapped child, she confides in her partner and friend Detective Rick Jameson about Erebus.

Rick helps her prove that Erebus is a real person and not her imagination. Erebus is forced into a stalemate and leaves without destroying Lucinda. Book 3 Erebus brings Erebus back to Philadelphia where he kidnaps John Cooper from the psychiatric hospital and then entices Lucinda into rescuing him. This trilogy was very fast-paced and exciting.

I liked John and his wife Kathy. Mac was a great character too. I loved the relationship she had with her partner and his family. I found Erebus to be exactly what the author created him to be — evil. It was easy to read and quite engaging. The way she wrote the speaking parts for the different characters, I could actually hear the differences in their speech patterns in my mind as they spoke. This is definitely an adult fiction book, and there is use of some swearing and coarse language.

Some of the murder evidence may be a bit gruesome for some people. I gave this novel 4 out of 5 stars. Thanks to the author Linda Barton, who provided a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review. A positive opinion was not required.

All thoughts are my own. Oct 23, Shirley Ford rated it it was ok. I was looking forward to reading this book, but I was so disappointed.

Books to die for, Characters to love

The story is about John Cooper, a troubled Detective, happily married to his devoted wife Kathy, who has helped him through a period of alcoholism after losing his friend and partner in an arrest that went wrong. He is proud of his achievements in always solving crimes. One night, out for a meal with Kathy, he receives a strange call from someone saying he has been chosen as a worthy opponent in The Game.

Murders begin to take place, the caller called Erebus tells John he is the Tracker in this Game and tells him he has to follow the set of clues to discover the answer. John Cooper has no idea why he has been chosen and finds himself dragged deeper and deeper into the game, and starts drinking again.

His marriage is falling apart. Erebus appears to know his every move. The ending is quite shocking and we never find out who or what Erebus is. The idea of the story is a good one, which is why I did read to the end, but I have a few issues with this book. The first being — it needs proofreading! Oct 07, Janine rated it it was amazing. Unfortunately it becomes far too personal he and his loved ones pay the final price The ending is quite a twist that lets you realize John has changed. Someone keeps calling him and taunting him over each killing that may or may not have been a set up. His guilt over his partner getting killed years ago doesn't help matters and seems to be a driving force in the way this story ends.

Apr 08, Ted Tayler rated it it was ok. I expected a logical plot, whereas it was anything but logical. In fact, the whole story was very disjointed and presented with quite a juvenile turn of phrase. This might be an easy read, but there are a lot better books out there in this genre. May 03, Wanda Hartzenberg rated it liked it Shelves: Yes, a really great read until you reach the end bor atleast until I reached the end.

The paranoid built up was really well done. The characters really well and solidly placed but the main characters-our hero and his spouse simply failed to get me engrossed in their plight. I hoped the ending would change this but Still for the genre a good read. Oct 19, Yeji Kim rated it really liked it.

Looking forward the the Book Worms discussions for the Book Club. Probably need to read the others in the trilogy to get some kind of closure to an overarching story arc or so I'm hoping. The ending is quite shocking and we never find out who or what Erebus is. Have read the entire series It was easy to read and quite engaging.

It was a really fast read and overall pretty good. Towards the end, the story gets a bit odd and seems like it's wrapped up a bit too fast. Probably need to read the others in the trilogy to get some kind of closure to an overarching story arc or so I'm hoping. Feb 17, Carl Dixon rated it did not like it. Don't waste your time Not a great book. I'd got the plot ending worked out very early. Nothing about this book would make me want to read any more of them.

Thankfully it's only a trilogy. I really liked this book. Definitely a page turner, keeps you guessing!!! I would have never guessed at the ending. Looking forward to the next installment of this series. Keep them coming Linda!!!!! May 01, Glenda rated it did not like it Recommends it for: The editing for Kindle was horrible.

Misspelled words, improperly punctuation, words left out of sentences and words used improperly. Aside from that, a really flimsey plot. I generally love a good mystery. Apr 23, Irene rated it really liked it Shelves: A fast paced thriller that will give you chills! I still think about the plot and characters, months after finishing the book.

Louise Penny

Editorial Reviews. Review. "I was hooked from the beginning of this book and couldn't put it Book 1 of 3 in The Next Move, You're Dead Trilogy (3 Book Series). Vivian said: Next Move You're Dead is a mystery novel centering around Detective John Cooper as he I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

What a complicated yet exciting and engaging story line. There are layers of mystery, tension and further character development, mainly of Gamache and Beauvoir. The running story of the terrorist plot barely averted told in a series of flashbacks is terrific as is the new evidence of the Olivier case from A Brutal Telling. A further story revolves around a murder in the hunt for Samuel de Champlain's body in Quebec City.

These three plots are occasionally a bit fractured but none the less, Penny makes it work and this is my favorite thus far and highly recommended. I read this book without knowing about the rest of the series and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sense of place, history, personal deep emotions, intrigue. This series of books is best read in order.

Next Move, You're Dead

Plotting is much improved from previous books. Annoying that she uses the term "could care less" when she means "couldn't care less", especially when the French mispronunciations are so acute and comical.

Perhaps it was the editor. I continue to delight in this series! Our hero Armand Gamache is having a hard time of it, going thru a dark night of the soul. Will hearing that "the English are good pumpkins", and that indeed "the night is a strawberry" be enough to save him? Sorry, no spoilers here. This is a great continuation of the previous books in the series. The story fills in so many places and characters that were missing previously. Gamache, on leave in Quebec to get over a dreadful case, spends time with his wife and his early mentor.

Finally they feel they can leave him alone to continue his recovery. He's found a new interest in hunting for the remains of Champlain, finding an ancient English library what has many old documents. Meanwhile, strange letters arrive from Three Pines, where his sidekick is trying to determine if Olivier really was guilty of murder. The two men, in their separate quests, find peace and healing in a hunt for something different from what they think they seek.

Another superb Gamache novel. The more I read and reread Louise Penny's books, the more I'm convinced that first time readers must read them in sequence.

Penny's writing is very finely nuanced, especially in character development which goes hand in hand with plot development. LOVE and was crying at the end. Definitely at least read "The Brutal Telling" before this one, since it is essentially part 2 of that book. I really like plots that involve several different story lines, so this was great - and they all relate around the same theme, leaders making mistakes and the results. I found this to be the best book yet in Penny's series featuring Armand Gamache and his team.

This book builds on and resolves a story line from the previous book. Also, the characters, even secondary ones, grow and change through the various books; I imagine the reviewers who gave the book low points were not familiar with with the earlier books in the series. I knew little about Quebec history, and I very much appreciated Penny's taking the reader through so much of it. I really enjoyed this. It was like a Canadian Dan Brown novel though better written, by far. I loved the Champlain mystery and the different, intersecting stories.

I am going to read more in this series! So far this is the best of the series weaving together three tales, The first the revisiting the unsolved questions of the murder investigated in the previous book; the outfall of what caused serious injuries to Gamache and Bevoir; and third, a murder in an unlikely place, in the subbasement of a Anglois library in Quebec of a amateur archeologist searching for the missing body of Samuel Champlain.

It was extremely well done and was the most enjoyable book of the series so far. Have read the entire series Anxiously waiting for the next book. This book is a sequel the to Penny's previous book The Brutal Telling. That said, you could still read Bury Your Dead independently but some of the emotional subtext would be lost.

Our beloved Inspector Gamache has retreated to Quebec City to recover from injuries sustained from a recent case.
