Just received "Godsong" today April17, but suspect its April 3rd postal scan and the attendant delay was the result of USPS activity and not the fault of either the seller or certainly not the fault of the author. USPS has done this before. In any rate, I'm a happy camper having read the Bhagavad Gita as a free spirited 17 year old and now reading it again in new form at the age of Thank you, Amit Majmudar for making this possible, a beautiful poetic rendering in hardback form.
I appreciate your attention to detail! I had a number of complaints as I read this book: First, I believe that a translation should render every word of the original, excepting perhaps proper nouns. The translation itself should tell the reader how the translator understands the text.
The gold standard for this principle is Franklin Edgerton's hyper-literal translation first published in in the Harvard Oriental Series. Instead Majmudar leaves certain key terms untranslated and instead supplies a note giving somewhat uninformed remarks on those terms p.
I could not find any specific citation of earlier translations Majmudar used even though he criticizes other translators including this statement on page Okay, basically this book is ungrounded in history or context or scholarship, as Majmudar says on page xvii: Maybe that will be okay for some readers.
