I read this book as an inquiring Seventh Day Adventist looking to understand the position of others when it comes to the Sabbath. While I no longer lean towards accepting the Seventh Day Sabbath, this book was not the main reason for my change.

On the contrary, I believe the Skip Mcarthy put forth the best essay on the Seventh Day Sabbath I've ever read, and he clearly took a much more biblical approach while explaining his position. Both Joseph Pipa and Charles Arand Sunday Sabbath and Lutheran Sabbath representatives had very little scripture to support their claim and mostly drew their conclusions from their respective "authoritative" texts, the Westminster Confession and Faith and the writings of Martin Luther, respectively.

I though that Craig Blomberg did a goodjob at presenting the Sabbath as fulfilled in Christ. I didn't like how some of his remarks in both his essay and his responses to other contributors were condescending towards Pipa and Mcarthy for their belief in a literal Sabbath.

In addition, starting your essay with church history rather than scripture could be off putting to some in more "biblicist" traditions like SDA's. While Bloomberg's essay by itself did not convince me to change my views on the Sabbath, it did awake enough curiosity that I decided to study this topic further. If you read this book without any preconceived ideas, I think the SDA position will end up winning the debate, even if it's not the most correct. If you are an inquiring Sabbatarian looking to explore the other side of the argument, I would recommend "From Sabbath to Lord's Day" by D.

Thought this was an excellent exchange between the four theologians. I find Blomberg the most convincing, however I have similar views to his on this topic anyhow. Pipa had his moments, however never seems to make that connection between the Sabbath and the church's Sunday gatherings. He makes a good case for Sunday worship in the NT Church in some places, however perhaps overstates his case in others. He also seems to want to have his cake and eat it too, such as in his discussion of Col 2: That seems to be a bit of a stretch.

MacCarty sticks to his guns, and gives a valiant attempt to defend his position, however seems to fall short in my opinion as; Explaining the NT texts that putatively cut against his thesis seems exceedingly contrived and his reading of the OT texts doesn't take modern exegesis into account and does not coincide with the plain reading of those texts.

However, it doesn't seems that any of the scholars take Historical-Critical methods into account. This presents an issue as some of the research is quite relevant. At least some time on this would have been helpful, however this likely speaks to the nature of the theology ascribed to by the authors. Furthermore, thought another point of view is mentioned in the Intro i. So Arand and Blomberg share much of the same opinion, and then we have the other two positions, though the fourth is really then lacking. Though, it would be close to Blomberg's view and theological method may account for the differences.

All in all, I thought this was a very good purchase and am quite happy with it despite the areas I felt it was lacking in.
