Maggie is shown as a sassy and smart lady, who travels to different parts of France with her loving husband and is helped by him to get the taste of exquisite restaurants of France being a chef. Please try again later. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The stories were very good with great characters and very interesting plots. You never know until the end who did the crime. I love the descriptions of the food and countryside. The story is interesting and all the details make it come alive. Great easy read, well written and not complicated. Planning on reading the next three books. One person found this helpful. This was a great series and definitely looking forward to reading the next three books in the Maggie Newberry - Dernier series.

That kind of thing is always a let-down. If the writer was short on space, maybe she could have cut some of the pastis and gitanes.

Also, as a French first language speaker, I would advise the author not to use bad French when speaking in the voice of a Frenchman. I needed to go to my osteopath, to get my jaw realligned after reading the series, from grinding my teeth. The characters were also very stereotipical. Although not an American I could not get my head around a college graduate, Maggie, being so dumb.
Come on not being able to handle the language after living in the country for three years!! Why was she presented as so naive when she came from a rather sophesticated family? If a high school student handed in such a poorly written piece I would sit with her and offer some very serious editorial advice or she would have to settle for an F. Laurent has said the will try this for a short time then return to America but Maggie can see he loves the challenge. Maggie soon is intrigued by the murders that took place at the vineyard years ago.
She can't seem to believe the story circulated by the villagers. Accidents start to happen. Maggie is almost assaulted but she tries not to let Laurent know. Then the night when Laurent has the launch of his wines Connor is found dead. He and a teenage girl were having an affair and she is pregnant.
Her father is arrested but everyone is questioned. To make matters worse Grace had been trying to get pregnant but couldn't. Now she finds out she is expecting and Connor is the father. Grace and Maggie are being held by a deranged village woman at the same time someone sets fire to Laurent's vineyard. The person that saves them is the one Maggie had considered the prime suspect.
The twists are for the reader to discover but again a mystery to enjoy. Wonderful portrait of France, food and the characters. Maggie Newberry quit her advertising job and moved from Atlanta to southern France while her boyfriend, Laurent, tried to plan what to do after inheriting a vineyard from his uncle. While a few of the villages were welcoming, some definitely were not. Many villagers told them living there will bring bad luck. The story proceeded with descriptions of the harvesting and wine making processes.
As they celebrated the opening of the new bottles, another murder occurred in the house. Maggie found herself in trying to solve it, thinking there might be a connection between the two events.

Susan Kiernan-Lewis has an eye for detail and offered a lot of descriptions of people and places. Her writing was fluent, occasionally providing some interesting observations: I read it first and felt the short explanations were sufficient to fill in what was necessary except for a concentration camp reference. There are several grammatical errors and an excess of French words, mostly untranslated, seemingly peppered around with no apparent rationale. The medical diagnosis at the end should have been discovered decades earlier.
