For one thing, Poppy and James' relationship wasn't as nice and harmless as I'd always believed. He treat I decided to reread this series a couple years ago, but I didn't make it very far for some reason. He treats her like a legit child. However, this book was way sexier than I remembered.

There are references to exactly what kind of wrestling James likes, and he and Poppy are basically necking all the time. I have no idea how this stuff passed over my head when I was younger. Smith's prose is awesome. It's so easy to read. Here's a portrait I did of James a million years ago View all 10 comments. Jun 14, Laura rated it liked it Shelves: Buddy Read with Deborah. I didn't enjoy it that much either. This was a fast and entertaining read, but a little too simple and maybe a bit juvenile for me. I may have loved it at 14 though and I think it would be a perfect read for young girls around that age.

Jun 06, Honistie rated it it was ok. As an adult I rated this as a 2 star. The story had potential and the characters are likable. Poppy was well developed and we learned about James as we read the book. Phil also did some things a sane person would not if the situations were real. I feel the mother and step-father should have played a bigger role in the story. It was like they were there only because Poppy is a teenager and they HAD to be there.

From a teenager point of view the brother was brave and amazing, maybe a little too involved but acceptable. As an adult I was a little board with the book. I was a little more than half way into the book and I thought there was not going to be any action with the little amount of pages I have left to read. Once the action started, it moved so fast the book was over. Questions were left unanswered, one I thought was important to the story.

What was the dream about? From a teenager point of view, the book probably moved quickly and exactly how it should have.

The end of the book explanation is probably accepted with no questions left over. I saw some similarities with this series and newer released vampire series. Some examples of this are character similarities vampires going outside during the day and even character names Quinn, Claudine, and Eric. I will say Eric might not be anything as it is a common name but it was pretty odd considering the other two names. It makes me wonder if the other two authors read this story before writing their own series. As a mother, I like is how L.

Smith wrote about Poppy being in love with James but did not make or imply they had a sexual relationship. Young teens are faced with enough sexual media that it is nice to have one talk about emotions.

In my personal opinion James should have been a little more aggressive considering he is a vampire and all. Among some of my favorites. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot.

The pretense an 4 Stars I would recommend Secret Vampire for any teen girl because in encompasses a wide variety of genres into one book without going too heavily into any of them. The pretense and romance were well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors, and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!! Oct 31, Rissa rated it liked it. I love that book! I own 9 books of Night World so it was just about time I get to read them. I didn't really expect anything, I know L. Smith style of writing, I love it but it's rare for it to be mind blowing. Except in Vampire Diaries of course. While reading the book I actually realized that I have read it a very long time ago. I did not remember much or how the story is gonna end but it felt like deja vu very ofter.

The everyday surrounding world is just like our MORE?

Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (maybe)

The everyday surrounding world is just like ours. But there is another world that people do not know about. And it is the Night World. It is full of vampires, witches and werewolves I assume there are more but so far in book one we are only introduced to them. I always liked L. Smith for her ability to write about this type of world. The vampire in this book are of focus but they are not something blah.

They are powerful and have advanced senses. They need human blood to survive and I actually very much liked how this need for human blood was explained in the book. Poppy is the main character in this book. I really have an issue with the name but other than that she is rather likable character. She is just cute. Her best friend is James, he is the dark vampire who tries to help Poppy when she gets third stage pancreatic cancer. However, Poppy's twin brother Phil does not trust James.

To be honest, the characters in this book are very simple. James is Poppy's best friend. Poppy is in love with James. James does not return Poppy's feeling. At least till she gets cancer. In the end they are soulmates and in love. This book had witches. Smith books it was a very easy read. Like a one afternoon book really. Maybe that is why I didn't remember a whole story even I read it in my life before. It was actually a little bit weird how this book was structures. Then in last 50 pages a villain is introduced.

In last 20 pages the villain is busted and it all end very happy ending. Just strange story building. Et que dire de la fin? Mais c'est quoi cette fin?! Vraiment je ne sais pas quoi dire d'autre sur ce roman, sauf que je ne lirai absolument pas la suite. I gave up on "Teen Vampire" books back when I still was a teenager However, this book had been sitting on my shelf for years and I thought I would give it a chance.

It was actually really entertaining. It is very 90's, but I found it charming and funny. There is no insta-love, no air-headed heroine getting herself into trouble, and no overly brooding teenagers. There were some concepts I had never heard before. For example, "Lamia" which are vampires who are born and actually age like humans, I gave up on "Teen Vampire" books back when I still was a teenager For example, "Lamia" which are vampires who are born and actually age like humans, but still require blood to live and can stop aging if they choose.

This book follows Poppy, an optimistic young girl who finds out she has a deadly form of cancer. Her family, including her twin brother Phil, are all very distraught. Poppy's childhood best friend James might hold the key to saving Poppy permanently. View all 4 comments. Who knows, maybe by the time I re-read the last of them, there will finally be a new release date set for the final book in the series.

Sep 15, nat. I feel like somebody in a bad horror movie. Poppy, I'm a vampire. I do want to learn about the other creatures, so I'm hoping maybe in the next books. I'm kind of intrigued about Ash. There's something incredibly beautiful about L. It's unlike any of the modern YA books I have read--probably because this book was written before I was born--but Smith has this way of captivating you with the simplicity of her narration, interesting though not necessarily unique plot, and well-developed characters you cannot help but want to have more of.

Jun 07, Deborah Obida rated it it was ok Shelves: Buddy read with Laura, i hope you like it more than I did. This book was a total let down, the only thing I like about it is that it's fast paced. The plot is way to shallow with very little world building. The characters are boring and annoying, the main character is sooooo annoying like grow up already.

The characters in this story are not entirely captivating, but I was interested enough in the storyline and plot to plow through and see where it took me. She has the chose to become a vampire or not. Though not a book that changed my life, I look forward to seeing what she does in the second installment.

When I first read Secret Vampire I was hooked. This time around I feel it was a simple, easy, and very PG read at that. I felt time moved slow throughout the book until you came to the end where it went way to fast. I would overall give this book a 3.
