The most prevalent being that I'm not quite sure why it was titled Harlot's Ghost, as it is that Harlot's character is not only fairly secondary despite his character's under girding carriage throughout the narrative, but he's not actually confirmed as being dead; as is implied in the very beginning of the book. Still wish I knew how that first story ended.

I read this book when it was first released and I liked it a lot more back then, probably because I had expectations of a sequel, and the writing, storytelling and plotting are the usual high standard you expect from Mailer This time around, it seemed too long and the lack of a sequel to tie up the loose ends kind of ticked me off.

I do appreciate hard work; you have to admire the amount of effort that went into writing this book. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I make no argument against Norman Mailer being a masterly literary giant and a wordsmith of extraordinary range, and so I approached the first few chapters of this novel with excitement.

I thought I would be in for a treat. Some very long novels keep you reading with eager anticipation all the way through, and some very long novels have you wishing they would hurry on and get fully to the point - back to where the journey started, so that the original plot can finally be unravelled. Unfortunately, Mailer, with his obvious love of manipulating prose, has rambled on too much and constructed the latter type of novel.

I can't say that what he either researched or imagined about the inner workings and politics of the CIA didn't pique interest at times, but there were far too many moments when whole chunks of the book felt like surplus material. Also, a significant bulk of his story was in the format of written correspondence between a rooky CIA worker and the unstable wife of someone in CIA's upper echelon. I know it's fiction, but would names, secrets and other revelations be bandied around so freely by two people who knew they should be in positions of responsible concealment of whatever they heard or saw?

And unfortunately for the reader, so much of the content in these letters was extraneous to the main point of the story. But even forgetting the unlikely scenario of reams of intelligence information being put on paper and delivered through the mainstream mail system, and even forgetting the author's inimitable control of prose, this book was too long by at least fifty percent or more. At first it appears to be the autobiography of Harry Hubbard, which is made up of anecdotes of his life and actions with the CIA, the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution, the Mafia in the 60's and the assassination of JFK.

The very beginning of the book starts with Harry being told by a friend that his mentor Hugh Montague a top level CIA officer has either been assassinated or committed suicide on his boat. He then is told by his wife, Kittredge a CIA member , that she has been unfaithful and is in love with another high level CIA intelligence officer.

Under perceived threat of his own assassination by the CIA he escapes to Moscow. It is there that he rereads in a hotel room the dense manuscript of his life at the CIA which he has documented and kept secret over his career. At that point, the book really begins. It raises basic questions about the fight against Communism and goes into the Cuban Revolution and the Cuban Missile Crisis and, perhaps most important, raises questions about the assassination of JFK and who was ultimately responsible.

Mailer had planned to write a sequel - Harlot's Grave - but other projects intervened and the sequel was never written. Harlot's Ghost ends with the words "To be continued". From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article needs additional citations for verification.
