The anecdotes he told in that interview were truly terrifying, and elevated my expectations for the film Deliver Us From Evil, "inspired" on Sarchie's experiences. However, the film took a simpler and safer road, and the result is mediocre, but passable.

During the four days that Derrickson spent with Sarchie, the retired police sergeant gave him a copy of the non-fiction book The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel.
Derrickson optioned the book for a hundred dollars and adapted it into The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Writing for Variety , Andrew Barker's review called it "a professionally assembled genre mashup that's too silly to be scary, and a bit too dull to be a midnight-movie guilty pleasure". But the film's real problem is that it's somehow both one-note and convoluted. Of the film's atmosphere, Sachs wrote that "some sequences are effectively spooky" but "just as many feel uninspired".
